CHAPTER 14

Andi found herself pushing a shopping cart through the aisles of the local grocery store, contemplating dinner plans for herself, her mom, and Hannah. As she perused the produce section, her attention was unexpectedly drawn to a familiar face—Emmitt’s mother, who was similarly engrossed in selecting fresh vegetables.

Emmitt’s mom looked up and smiled upon seeing Andi. “Well, if it isn’t Andi Sutton! How have you been, dear?”

Andi returned the smile, genuinely pleased to see her. “Mrs. Grimes! I’ve been doing well, thank you. How about you?”

Mrs. Grimes, her eyes reflecting kindness, replied, “Oh, hanging in there. You know how it is. How’s Hannah? And your mom?”

Andi briefly updated Mrs. Grimes on Hannah and her mom, sharing some of the positive developments over the past few years.

“I’m so glad to hear that your mom is doing so well!”

“Me too,” Andi said gratefully.

Mrs. Grimes adopted a thoughtful expression. “Andi, how have things been between you and Emmitt? I know it’s been a while since you two were, well, a couple.”

Andi’s gaze lowered for a moment before she looked back at Mrs. Grimes. “It’s been... Since I left the ranch, things haven’t been the same. Our lives have drifted apart, you know? But I saw Emmitt just yesterday.”

“You did? He didn’t tell me that.”

“Yes, I went to the ranch to see everyone. After, we had dinner together and tried to catch up.”

Mrs. Grimes nodded, understanding etched on her features. “It’s not easy, navigating those waters after so much time has passed, but Emmitt cares about you, Andi. I can see it in his eyes, and I’m not so sure that time has changed that. Sometimes, it just takes time for things to fall into place.”

Andi appreciated Mrs. Grimes’ sincerity. “I want things to be good between us, too. It’s just that life has taken us in different directions.”

Mrs. Grimes placed a reassuring hand on Andi’s shoulder. “Well, dear, sometimes it takes a shared interest or a common goal to bring people back together. You never know what might happen.”

Andi smiled. “You never know what might happen,” she agreed.

The conversation took a turn toward more personal matters. Mrs. Grimes, usually warm and composed, revealed a vulnerability that hinted at the complexities within her own family.

“Andi,” Mrs. Grimes began, her tone carrying a hint of sadness, “I appreciate your friendship with Emmitt. It means a lot to both of us, and maybe I shouldn’t tell you this, but…”

“If you have something on your mind, you can tell me,” Andi assured her.

Mrs. Grimes’ smile seemed a little forced. “Well, it’s just that I have to admit, things have been a bit rough between my husband and our son lately. They’ve always had their differences, but it feels like there’s a growing distance, and I don’t know how to bridge it.”

Andi gave her a small smile, drowning with sympathy and concern. “I’m sorry to hear that, Mrs. Grimes. I hate that things are difficult between them. It must be tough for you, too.”

Mrs. Grimes nodded, a reflective look in her eyes.
